Australians Applying for NZ Jobs — CV Tips and Differences

Moving from Australia to New Zealand is one of the most common international relocations in either direction. The two countries have a close relationship under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement — but the job markets have meaningful differences.

Automatic Work Rights — No Visa Required

Australian citizens and permanent residents have automatic right to live and work in New Zealand under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement. Note this explicitly on your CV: "Australian Citizen — full NZ work rights under Trans-Tasman arrangement." This removes any uncertainty for NZ employers who may otherwise assume international visa requirements apply.

Adapting Your AU Resume for NZ

• NZ English spelling is the same as AU English — no changes needed there
• Add a NZ address or note your relocation status in your cover letter
• Include a NZ-reachable phone number
• Consider the NZ market equivalent of your AU employers — large AU corporates may need explanation for NZ SME employers who do not know them
• Quantification requirements are slightly lower for NZ than AU — but include all your metrics anyway

Explaining Your Move to NZ

NZ employers will appreciate a brief explanation of why you are moving. This can be one sentence in your cover letter: "I am relocating to Auckland in [month] and seeking a role in [sector]." If you are already in NZ, note this. If you are still in Australia, note your anticipated arrival date and confirm you are committed to the move.
